How does it work (1)

• Master/slave architecture: the PC is the master, the I/O devices are the slaves polled by the master (one exception covered later)

• The tasks performed by the master are implemented by an host controller located inside the PC

• The tasks performed by the slaves (all USB devices, including the hubs) are implemented by microcontrollers located inside the I/O devices
